TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, DELTA Certificates?
TEFL/TESOL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages are used interchangeably to refer to a basic certificate that is required by most, but not all, schools to teach English. The reputable ones are all 120 hours. The amount of observed teaching practice for in-house courses varies, and there are also online courses. I had been teaching EFL for 6 years when I finally decided to get one, after losing out on a couple of lucrative jobs because a potential employer could not check the box labeled "Has TEFL/TESOL Certificate." It was a good opportunity to reflect on and consolidate all my years of teaching, but these courses are really aimed at the beginning EFL teacher, not an experienced one.
Here are good places to get a TEFL/TESOL certificate:
Thailand: Numerous 1-month certificate granting courses are advertised on Dave's ESL Cafe regularly, and take place throughout the country. A bonus is that at the end of the course, you will usually be led to/offered a job teaching locally.
Philippines: TEFL International and Harvest Christian International in Cebu. In-house and online options.
Vietnam: 1 mo, in-house at International TEFL Academy in Ho Chi Minh City:
Malaysia: IMEC offers courses.
Indonesia: Trinity College London offers a reputable TESOL course in Bali
CELTA/DELTA - The Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults and Diploma of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, are both by Cambridge, a powerhouse of EFL texts and assessments. The CELTA is considered more prestigious than most TEFL/TESOL certificates by many schools or programs, especially ones run by Brits. A good number of teaching jobs these days prefer a CELTA. The Delta is unique in that it is the only real advanced professional certificate in EFL. It consists of 3 modules that do not have to be taken all at once. Not many EFL teachers go on to get a DELTA - this is because it is nowhere near as valuable as a Master's degree, but is still time-consuming and costly, so only makes sense if you can afford to do it while working as an EFL teacher at a particular place. Cost varies according to location for the CELTA, even if taken as an online (distance) course. The DELTA is offered online as well, but is quite expensive: http://thedistancedelta.com/
Here is where you can take them in-house:
Celta: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket in Thailand; British Council in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. See: http://www.teaching-esl-to-adults.com/celta-course-locations.html
Delta: English First Tamara in Jakarta; British Council or International House Bangkok, BC in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; GPex Central in Penang, ILA Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh
Delta courses often are not scheduled regularly, and many websites do not include centers in SE Asia. If there is another center that offers DELTA not on this list, please inform me: [email protected]
